Written by Ed Hannigan, this era of the book moved away from the reality-hopping cosmic threats of Doctor Strange and instead focused on a smaller, highly eccentric, street-level team dealing with the deeply disturbed, satirical underbelly of the Marvel Universe.

The delusional vigilante Greg Salinger, operating under the mantle of the Foolkiller, has taken the Defenders' quirky, student-filmmaker companion, Dollar Bill, hostage. Holled up in a television studio, the Foolkiller plans to use a live broadcast to unleash his puritanical manifesto upon the world, broadcasting his intent to execute anyone he deems a "fool" with his lethal purification gun.
