A dark, pivotal, and deeply psychological issue in Mark Gruenwald's seminal run. "Ambush!" shifts the entire narrative spotlight onto John Walker as he deals with extreme grief and trauma. Rather than allowing him time to mourn his murdered parents, the Commission on Superhuman Activities ruthlessly forces a catatonic Walker back into uniform, sending him into a high-stakes confrontation alongside Freedom Force to take down the anti-registration mutant terrorist group known as The Resistants.
The issue opens in Custer's Grove, Georgia, where John Walker sits numbly in a jail cell following his violent, rage-fueled slaughter of the Watchdogs. His Commission handler, Adrian Sammish, alongside Battlestar (Lemar Hoskins), arrives to bail him out. Walker is practically catatonic, robotically reciting the horrific events of his parents' death.
